JOLIET, Ill. – CASA of River Valley awarded State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, the Philanthropy Recognition Award for Manley’s dedication to children in the foster care system.
Manley hosts an ongoing luggage drive, collecting new suitcases so that children can have dignity when they travel to new homes, rather than carrying their belongings in garbage bags.
Also, under Manley’s leadership, the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren pilot program, known as GRG+, was signed into law, to assist in navigating the foster care and adoption processes for grandparents and other adults who are raising children not their own.
“Deep in my heart, I know that so many other volunteers deserve this award,” Manley said. “The real champions are those who work everyday to ensure that kids are safe and cared for; that’s the CASA advocate.”
CASA stands for court appointed special advocates. It’s mission is to “draw from community resources to reduce the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social impacts of abuse and neglect experienced by children in foster care in the Will and Grundy Counties,” according to the group’s website, www.casaofrivervalley.org.
Manley has served on the CASA Board of Directors and Advisory Board.
Since 1994, CASA has helped over 3,600 children. CASA supported more than 447 children last year.
CASA hosts an annual Christmas Express fundraiser, which will be held December 6 & 7. It includes a Metra train ride from New Lenox to Tinley Park round trip, breakfast, activities and a visit with Santa. For more information, visit www.casaofrivervalley.org.
CASA presented Manley with the award at the 2nd Annual Philanthropy Recognition Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Arkas Restaurant Group, which includes Rosemary Cafe, 158 Chop House, Juliet’s Tavern, Mousaka Greek Taverna, Hamburgerseria, and the Renaissance Center.
