Manley Meets with Moldovan Consul General

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, met Anton Lungu, the very first Consul General of Chicago from Moldova. Rep. Manley serves on the Illinois House International Relations, Tourism, and Trade Committee.

Approximately 30,000 Moldovans live in the Chicago area, which is about a third of all Moldovans living in the United States.

“Forming strong trade relationships is an important strength to our Illinois economy,” Rep. Manley said. “Though Moldova is smaller in population than we have here in Illinois, they offer opportunities for future growth that will benefit both of us.”

Before giving a speech on the floor of the Illinois House of Representatives, he first met privately

with Manley, and a few other legislators.

Moldova is an Eastern European country, formerly of the Soviet republic, located between Ukraine

and Romania. The total population there is 2.5 million, which is about a quarter of the size of Illinois.

Wine is Moldova’s leading export, ranking the nation in the top 15 exporters in the wine world.

The role of a consul general is the senior diplomat heading the consulate general, particularly on

matters of trade and economics between the two nations. Lungu is the first Moldovan Consul General in Chicagoland. His office is located in Naperville, DuPage County, due to Naperville’s increased population of Moldovan residents.
