JOLIET, Ill. – After initiating an opportunity to volunteer, Minooka High School Freshman Gavin Luzbetak, 14, joined State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, to help pass out free backpacks at the annual back to school fair Saturday. The fair, which is co-hosted with Senator Meg Loughran Cappel, D-Shorewood, welcomed hundreds of kids and their parents at Joliet West High School.
“Gavin is an impressive young person who researched bills and legislation before reaching out to me asking to participate and volunteer within our district,” Manley said. “He drafted a résumé that demonstrated that he is a motivated, civic-minded student who wants to be involved. Organizing this fair with dozens of vendors and hundreds of kids is a lot of work, and we were happy to have his help.”
Luzbetak, who lives in Channahon, will attend Minooka Community High School as a freshman. His favorite subjects are history, social studies and civics. He is interested in “supporting initiatives that create dialogue about neurodiverse youth,” according to his résumé.
He is a musical theatre performer, speech club member and trombonist.
“I would also like to thank Gavin’s mother, Angie Luzbetak, for not only bringing him to the event, but also for staying and volunteering herself,” Manley said.
