JOLIET, Ill. – State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, joined Governor J. B. Pritzker, and other elected officials, community members, students and staff to celebrate the grand opening of the Joliet Junior College (JJC) Center for Student Wellness and Support (CSWS) Tuesday. The CSWS received $250,000 in state funding through support from the governor and the Illinois General Assembly.
“The Center for Student Wellness and Support will provide students with immediate access to a wide range of mental health and wellness services, as well as training for staff to support students who are facing mental health challenges,” Rep. Manley said. “It is yet another example of our collective commitment -- JJC leadership, the Illinois legislators, and Governor Pritzker to honor equality and inclusivity for all students.”
Josh Stamborski, a JJC alumnus and former student trustee, was the first to come up with the idea for the CSWS. It will feature a holistic approach to wellness, including a Zen garden, calming outdoor areas and peaceful spaces for reflection and relaxation. It also houses the Wolves Essentials Pantry, providing food and clothing items to students in need.
Other services include personal counseling, group therapy, workshops, and mental health outreach events. The center will also help connect students with other community resources.
“The Center for Student Wellness and Support is a promise to honor the full and complete identity of every individual in our community,” said Joliet Junior College President Dr. Clyne Namuo. "You are people before you are students and employees, and my hope is that you carry that same spirit forward with every member of our JJC community, so they feel truly seen, supported and celebrated here at JJC.”
“Joliet Junior College is an engine of economic and educational opportunity that provides students with the skills and experiences to build a life for themselves and contribute to our communities,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “In order for students to make the most of their education, they need to feel supported, empowered, and mentally strong. Those priorities will now be addressed with the brand-new Center for Student Wellness and Support.”
“Having been a non-traditional student, myself when I graduated from JJC, I know first hand how important these types of services and physical spaces can be, especially for students facing additional challenges outside the classroom,” Rep. Manley said. “I applaud Josh Stambroski and JJC for continuing to focus on inclusion, equality and mental health for all.”
